Red Evie Wins UK Gr1 Lockinge Stakes

Monday, 21st May 2007

In the UK, exciting 4YO mare Red Evie (Intikhab-Malafemmena, by Nordico) gained the judge's verdict in a 3-way photo-finish to the £200,000 (A$480,000) Gr1 Lockinge Stakes (8 furlongs) for 4YOs & up at Newbury. Red Evie (ridden by Jamie Spencer for trainer Michael Bell) scored by a head from 5YO entire & ex-Italian star Ramonti (Martino Alonso-Fosca, by El Gran Senor) who was having his 1st start in Godolphin's colours, with a further head to French-raiding 4YO entire Passager (Anabaa-Passionnee, by Woodman). Red Evie was a 58,000 guineas (A$151,000) yearling at UK Tattersalls; after finishing unplaced in her only start as a 2YO, she returned last year for 7 successive victories (including the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot in June, Gr3 Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood in August & then defeating older rivals in Ireland's Gr1 Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron Stakes over 8 furlongs at Leopardstown in September). Overall Red Evie now has 8 wins from 10 starts.
