Pop Rock Wins Japan Meguro Kinen

Monday, 28th May 2007

Also in Tokyo yesterday, former Widden Stud shuttler Helissio (Fairy King-Helice, by Slewpy) added a Japanese group success when 6YO entire & last year's Gr1 Melbourne Cup runner-up Pop Rock (Helissio-Pops, by Sunday Silence) scored by a neck in the ¥112.5 million (A$1.1m) Gr2 Meguro Kinen (2500m) at Tokyo. Northern Farm-bred Pop Rock (ridden by Yutaka Take for trainer Katsuhiko Sumii) won this race for the 2nd successive year in defeating Coconut Punch (Manhattan Cafe-Coco Passion, by Groom Dancer) & Admire Fuji (Admire Vega-Admire Lapis, by Be My Guest). Since November's Melbourne Cup, Pop Rock finished runner-up (behind superstar Deep Impact) in Japan's most important race, the Gr1 Arima Kinen (2500m on turf) at Nakayama & then also finished runner-up in February's Gr2 Kyoto Kinen (2200m) at Kyoto.
