In South America, this year's Gr1 Gran Premio Asociacion Latinoamericana de Jockey Clubs (South America's most important weight-for-age race for that continent's top handicap horses) was held at Lima's Hipodromo de Monterrico in Peru & home-soil hero Deepak (Pikepass-Unbridled Queen, by Unbridled) led all-the-way to score a 2.75-lengths victory over 2000m on turf. Freddy Nossar's Kentucky-bred 4YO entire Deepak (ridden by Carlos Trujillo for trainer Jorge Salas) defeated George Strawbridge's Chilean Gr1 St Leger winner Kurbat (Mon Pote Le Gitan-Maria Estela, by Nureyev Dancer) with a further 6.75-length back to Polizonte (Prospector's Cap-Kanalu, by Buckaroo) in the 12-horse field. Deepak (a stakes-winner on both dirt & turf) "earned a berth to represent Peru in the 24th edition of the Latinoamericano by scoring a front-running victory in the Gr3 Clasico Enrique Meiggs (2000m on dirt) at Monterrico on January 27 & the Latinoamericano victory marked his 3rd straight graded stakes win at the distance," noted thoroughbredtimes.com. Overall Deepak (a US$12,000 yearling at the 2005 Keeneland September Sale) now boasts 7 wins from 15 starts.
