Packing Winner Takes HK Gr1 Champions & Chater Cup
In Hong Kong yesterday, NZ Cambridge Stud's multiple champion sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram-Lady Giselle, by Nureyev) added a Gr1 triumph when 5YO gelding Packing Winner (Zabeel-Musical Note, by Marscay) scored a half-length victory in the HK$8 million (A$1.14m) Gr1 Citi Champions & Chater Cup (2400m) at Sha Tin. Packing Winner (ridden by Douglas Whyte for trainer Peter Ho) defeated multiple Gr1-winning favoured 6YO gelding Viva Pataca (Marju-Comic, by Be My Chief) who had won this race in the last 2 seasons, with another 6-lengths back to 4YO gelding Win Practitioner (O'Reilly-Proteaceae, by Kaapstad). Packing Winner (a NZ$300,000 yearling at the 2004 NZ Bloodstock Premier Sale at Karaka) now has 6 wins (also including an 1800m track record in a Class 2 victory at Sha Tin last October) & 2 runners-up (including November's Gr2 International Cup Trial over 2000m at Sha Tin) from 16 starts for HK$9.4 million (A$1.34m) earnings.
