Sugar Babe Wins McNeil Stakes

Monday, 1st September 2008

Dual Gr1-winning Darley stallion & last season's champion 1st-crop sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill-Patrona, by Lomond) added a group success when favoured daughter Sugar Babe (Exceed And Excel-On Type, by Zeditave) returned from a 19-weeks spell to grab victory by a short-neck over her male rivals in the $125,000 Gr3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) for 3YOs at Caulfield. Despite racing wide for much of the journey, Sugar Babe (ridden by Dwayne Dunn for trainer Lee Freedman) defeated previously unbeaten gelding Whobegotyou (Street Cry-Temple Of Peace, by Carnegie) & previously unbeaten colt Cardinal Virtue (Elusive Quality-Valourina, by Snippets). Sugar Babe (a $500,000 yearling consigned by Strawberry Hill Stud at the 2007 Magic Millions January Gold Coast sale) now has 3 wins (also including 2007's Listed Debutants Stakes over 1000m at Caulfield) & 2 runners-up (in February's Gr3 Blue Diamond Prelude over 1100m at Caulfield & April's Gr2 Magic Night Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill) from 7 starts for $276,750 earnings.
