Ferguson Warns On UK Foal Over-Production

Monday, 15th December 2008

Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock adviser & head of Darley Stud management John Ferguson warned the Gimcrack dinner audience of the dangers associated with continuing "over-production of horses without regard for the costs & the relatively low levels of prize-money" reported London's The Daily Telegraph. Ferguson noted: "Naturally there are those who can afford the luxury of ownership without concerns of financial return, but racing cannot go back to being solely a sport of Kings, if it is to thrive in the long-term. We, as have others, have reduced stud fees significantly in order to help breeders. But breeding is like any business & the breeders themselves need to think carefully & make sound business decisions before covering their mares."
