Berlioz Wins VRC St Leger

Monday, 27th April 2009

NZ Cambridge Stud's multiple champion sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram-Lady Giselle, by Nureyev) added a black-type staying quinella when his colt Berlioz (Zabeel-Jervaux, by Slavic) scored by a short-neck in the $200,000 Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) for 3YOs at Flemington in Melbourne. Berlioz (ridden by Brad Rawiller for trainer David Hayes) defeated top-weighted fellow colt Precedence (Zabeel-Kowtow, by Shadeed) & favoured gelding Buffet (Danasinga-Flowers, by College Chapel). Berlioz (a $200,000 yearling consigned by Swettenham Stud at the 2007 Inglis Easter Sale in Sydney) now has 2 wins & 5 placings (including last start's Gr1 West Australian Derby over 2400m at Ascot on April 11 & March's Listed Melvista Stakes over 2200m at Ascot) from 7 starts for $242,275 earnings.
