Bollinger Son Starts Favourite But Injured At Start

Monday, 4th May 2009

Dr Tom Simon's Vinery Stables-owned boom US 3YO colt Friesan Fire (A.P.Indy-Bollinger, by Dehere) started favourite for the Gr1 Kentucky Derby, but trainer Larry Jones revealed the son of Australian Gr1 Coolmore Classic-winning mare Bollinger (Dehere-Bint Marscay, by Marscay) "grabbed a quarter out of the gate (left front)". Jones told Daily Racing Form: "He got hit real bad leaving the gate. He's bleeding. If you see blood on the track, it's his." Friesan Fire was with the leaders early, but dropped out to finish 18th of the 19 runners & Jones (who is retiring at the end of 2009) added: "I really felt like it was set up for him. That's why I'm quitting, guys. The Breeders' Cup won't get here soon enough!"
