Monday, 11th May 2009

Dual Derby-winning Coolmore sire & former NZ Windsor Park shuttler Montjeu (Sadler's Wells-Floripedes, by Top Ville) added a group success when 5YO gelding Ballack (Montjeu-Trephina, by Last Tycoon) scored a 0.75-length victory in the $100,000 Gr3 Doomben Handicap (2020m) at Doomben. Ballack (ridden by Damien Oliver for trainer Dan O'Brien) defeated favoured fellow 5YO gelding Rabbuka (Giant's Causeway-Explosive, by Fappiano) & front-running top-weighted 7YO gelding Sir Slick (Volksraad-Miss Opera, by Paris Opera). Ballack (a NZ$70,000 yearling at the 2005 NZ Bloodstock Premier Sale) now has 5 wins (also including 2008's Gr3 Tattersall's Cup over 2200m at Eagle Farm) & 8 placings (including both 2007's Gr1 WA Derby over 2400m at Ascot & Listed VRC St Leger over 2500m at Moonee Valley) from 25 starts for $471,825 earnings.
