US$5m Stakes-Producer Mackie Euthanased

Friday, 15th May 2009

Sheikh Mohammed's Kentucky-bred 16-year-old Darley broodmare Mackie (Summer Squall-Glowing Tribute, by Graustark) was euthanased "because of foaling complications while delivering an offspring by Any Given Saturday (the foal also died)" reported bloodhorse.com. Mackie originally sold as a weanling for US$550,000 at the 1993 Keeneland November breeding stock sale, then for a sale record US$5 million (in-foal to Mr Prospector) at the 2000 Keeneland January horses-of-all-ages auction & finally for US$3,255,168 (in-foal to Unbridled's Song) at the 2006 UK Tattersalls November sale. On the track, Mackie (whose half-brother Sea Hero won the 1993 Gr1 Kentucky Derby) recorded 3 wins (including 1996's Gr3 Busher Stakes at Aqueduct, plus placings in both 1996's Gr1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland & Gr3 Fair Grounds Oaks) from 8 starts. Mackie (1 of 7 stakes-winners out of 1993 Kentucky Broodmare-Of-The-Year Glowing Tribute) produced 9 named foals for 6 winners (including Gr2-winner Mr Mellon, Japanese group winner Seeking The Best & 2 stakes-placed runners); Seeking The Best sold for US$1 million & Mr Mellon for US$950,000 at their respective Keeneland September sales.
