Rocket Man Aimed At Melb Sprints

Friday, 22nd May 2009

Singapore's boom Australian-bred 3YO gelding & champion sprinter Rocket Man (Viscount-Macrosa, by McGinty) "is the 1st international to stake a claim for Melbourne's Spring Carnival riches" reported The Age newspaper. Rocket Man's trainer Patrick Shaw "is eyeing off the Schweppervescence Stakes at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day & the Gr1 The Age Classic at Flemington on the final day of the VRC Carnival". Rocket Man suffered his 1st defeat in 8 starts when runner-up by a neck (in new track record time) behind multiple Gr1-winning Australian-bred 5YO gelding & 2008 World Champion turf sprinter Sacred Kingdom in last Sunday's Gr1 KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m) at Kranji in Singapore. Rocket Man's "ultimate objective" is the Gr1 Hong Kong International Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin in December, but Shaw told The Age: "I have been to Moonee Valley & I think the 1000m around there wouldn't be a concern. He has the speed to take a position & he is familiar with the StrathAyr surface. He hasn't run down the straight course, but I don't see that being a problem if he tackles The Age Classic. Then after that there is a 5-week break to Hong Kong which would be ideal."
