Rebel Raider Early Melb Cup Favourite

Wednesday, 27th May 2009

Boom 3YO staying colt Rebel Raider (Reset-Picholine, by Dehere) "is favourite in early Melbourne Cup betting markets," reported The Daily Telegraph. Rebel Raider "has been listed at $17 in some betting charts & is favourite ahead of the Lloyd Williams-owned pair, 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient & C'est La Guerre". Earlier this month Rebel Raider scored a front-running 4-lengths victory in the Gr1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville to add to his victory in last November's Gr1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington & trainer Leon Macdonald confirmed the G1 Melbourne Cup (3200m at Flemington on November 3) "was the priority for Rebel Raider" & commented: "It's nice to know he is the early favourite & although that doesn't mean he will win the race, it does show that he is a genuine contender. He's had 3 weeks off since he won the SA Derby & will have another 2 weeks in the paddock before I bring him back into work." Rebel Raider (a $150,000 yearling consigned by Mill Park at the 2007 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale) boasts 5 wins (also including April's Listed Chairman's TAB Stakes over 2000m at Morphettville & 2008's Gr3 Darley Sires' Produce Stakes over 1600m in Adelaide) & 3 placings (including 2008's Listed Geelong Classic over 2206m) from 15 starts for $1,298,775 earnings.
