Waterhouse Says ARB "Should Hang Heads In Shame"

Tuesday, 15th September 2009

Meanwhile leading Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse declared on her website gaiwaterhouse.com.au: "The Australian Racing Board should hang their heads in shame & step down from their positions. This body is meant to represent US - the racing industry participants - punters, breeders, owners, jockeys & trainers. Thousands of breeders would not have even been asked their thoughts because Andrew Harding (ARB chief executive) & Bob Bentley (ARB chairman) feel they know it all. Both gentlemen were interviewed over the weekend & anyone who heard their interviews would reel in horror." Waterhouse continued: "What an extraordinary way they treated the jockeys on Thursday when they met to discuss the whip issue. The jockeys & breeders were represented by Peter McGauran & were left for 3 hours waiting in a room without being able to listen to the arguments of Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy or the RSPCA. Wouldn't it have been a better solution to have all parties represented & the ARB hear the different arguments? The jockeys request is such a minor adjustment. Isn't it pathetic that they cannot give way? As a leading journalist said this morning, they have painted themselves into a corner. Shame on you gentlemen!"
