UK Tatts Book 2 Day-2: $494k Selkirk Colt
In the UK auction ring overnight, trainer Paul Cole (acting for Dubai-based Jim & Fitri Hay) out-bid Shadwell Estates representative Angus Gold & trainer Amanda Perrett to pay equal top price of 260,000 guineas (A$494,000) for a colt by Selkirk (out of unraced Sadler's Wells mare Eminencia) during the 2nd session at the 3-day UK Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2. The colt was consigned by Kirsten Rausing's Staffordstown in Ireland & his dam Eminencia is a daughter of Gr1 Yorkshire Oaks winner My Emma & half-sister to her daughter Moments Of Joy; that pair lit up the Tattersalls sale ring in 2005 when sold for 1.3 million guineas (A$2.47m) & 1.65 million guineas (A$3.135m) respectively at the Tattersalls December Sale as part of a dispersal of the racing & breeding interests of Ian Matthews. Cole told racingpost.com: "Usually when you out-bid Sheikh Hamdan (Shadwell owner) it means you have spent too much so we'll have to see, but at least all the so-called good judges were in for him. He's by a Gr1 stallion & had the scope, pedigree & presence to be a good horse & that's what everybody is looking for. But he's definitely more of a 3YO-type."
