Melito Won't Accept US Invitation

Tuesday, 13th April 2010

Trainer Gerald Ryan confirmed star sprinting 3YO filly Melito (Redoute's Choice-Cloister, by Marauding) "is unlikely to contest the US Breeders Cup later this year despite her brilliant win" in last weekend's Gr1 T.J.Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick, reported The Daily Telegraph. Melito earned an invitation to contest racing's unofficial world championships at Louisville in Kentucky next November with victory at Randwick. Ryan revealed he had "discussed the American race with owner-breeder John Rippon" but both men "are favouring keeping the filly home for a spring campaign. If Melito was a colt, we would almost certainly take up the invitation. But she is a filly, it's a long way to go & the race is November, it's getting towards winter over there & she might strike a wet track or something. We are not ruling out the Breeders Cup entirely, but it is unlikely she will go." Ryan confirmed Melito will start in the Gr1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 24, before a 3-start Brisbane campaign in the Gr1 Doomben 10,000, Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap & Gr1 Winter Stakes. Melito (a $600,000 yearling at the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale) currently boasts 3 wins (also including 2009's Gr2 Furious Stakes over 1400m at Randwick & Gr2 Silver Slipper Stakes over 1100m at Rosehill) & 7 placings (including March's Gr3 Birthday Card Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill, plus 2009's Gr1 Thousand Guineas over 1600m at Caulfield, Gr2 Wakeful Stakes over 2000m at Flemington, Gr2 Tea Rose Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill, Gr2 Perfect Vision Ilasik Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill, Gr3 Silver Shadow Stakes over 1200m at Randwick & Listed Widden Stakes over 1100m at Randwick) from 13 starts for $852,150 earnings.
