US Sire & Record-Setting Miler Najran Dies Aged 12
US Gr3-winning 12-year-old stallion Najran "who equaled Dr Fager's North American record time for one mile on dirt, died following a paddock accident at Hopewell Farm in Kentucky," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Najran (Runaway Groom-Line Command, by Capote) had been scheduled to stand the 2011 breeding season at Red River Farms in Louisiana "but died before making the trip". Najran (who won 3 stakes, including the Gr3 Phoenix Breeders' Cup Stakes at Keeneland) "assured himself a spot in racing history when he completed the 2003 Westchester Handicap in 1min 32.24sec at Belmont Park to tie Dr Fager for the North American track record at one mile (Dr Fager's time came in the 1968 Washington Park Handicap at Arlington Park); nearly 8 years after Najran's record-tying day, the records still stand." Najran stood 7 seasons at Hopewell Farm & is the sire of 8 stakes-winners (including Gr2-winners Wasted Tears, Muny & Buckleupbuttercup).
