Kentucky Medication Regulations Review Begins

Thursday, 4th August 2011

Also in the US, 2 panels of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission “have begun the lengthy - and potentially contentious - process of reviewing & revising the state’s medication regulations” reported bloodhorse.com. Included in the reviews by the KHRC’s rules committee & the Equine Drug Research Council “are the medications, testing procedures & prohibited practices; disciplinary measures & penalties; and drug & medication classification schedules & withdrawal guidelines”. Being considered by the panels “are the recent recommendation by the Association Of Racing Commissioners International that furosemide (the anti-bleeder medication commonly marketed under the name Salix) be prohibited for race-day use & recent recommendations from the Racing Medication & Testing Consortium relating to race-day medications”. Once the EDRC & rules committee “have jointly compiled recommendations, public hearings will be heard before the regulations go forward”.
