New York Yearlings Day-2: US$1.2m Bernardini Colt

Thursday, 11th August 2011

In the US auction ring, Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock agent John Ferguson paid top price of US$1.2 million for a colt by triple Gr1-winning shuttler & US Eclipse Award-winning stallion Bernardini (out of triple-winning 13-year-old Carson City mare Easter Bunnette) during the closing session at the 2-day Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale in the Humphrey Finney Pavilion at Saratoga Springs in New York. The colt (consigned by Mill Ridge Sales as agent) is a half-brother to this year’s Gr1-winner Havre de Grace. The colt’s breeder Nancy Dillman purchased his dam Easter Bunnette for US$450,000 at the 2003 Keeneland November Sale; in addition to this latest colt, she has also produced foals which sold for US$450,000 & US$350,000 plus the US$380,000 paid for Havre de Grace in 2008. Ferguson told thoroughbredtimes.com: “The bottom line is that one has to be really excited about what Bernardini has done. Bernardini himself is an extremely well-made, beautiful horse & he's doing it both sides of the Atlantic. If you can get a stallion that can do it both sides, it makes a huge difference to his value. I would suggest that this one might go to Europe & then Dubai, because then Sheikh Mohammed could be around him all the time. He loved this horse the moment he laid eyes on him.” And Headley Bell of Mill Ridge (which consigned the colt for Dillman) added: “I thought he was an exceptional horse & he showed up every day. I think he's a very, very special horse & we're delighted obviously for Sheikh Mohammed to have him. The colt is so beautifully balanced, just so agile & always attentive to things & everything that you're looking for in a horse. And then he has the pedigree to match. If a horse is going to bring that kind of money, I think he's the one.”
