Cumani Melb Cup Runner's Final UK Start

Friday, 26th August 2011

Trainer Luca Cumani confirmed his Irish-bred 6YO gelding Drunken Sailor (Tendulkar-Ronni Pancake, by Mujadil) will have his final UK start in the Listed Windflower March Stakes (14 furlongs) at Goodwood this weekend, before “he goes into quarantine” in preparation for the trip to Australia for the Caulfield & Melbourne Cups, reported racingpost.com. At his most recent start, Drunken Sailor won the UK Gr3 Glorious Stakes (12 furlongs) at Goodwood on July 29 (3rd in the race was Jukebox Jury, who franked the form by winning last weekend’s French Gr2 Prix Kergorlay over 3000m at Deauville in which last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Americain finished 10th). And earlier this season, Drunken Sailor also won May’s UK Listed Aston Park Stakes (13.5 furlongs) at Newbury & finished 3rd in June’s Gr2 Hardwicke Stakes (12 furlongs) at Royal Ascot. Last year, Drunken Sailor won the UK Listed March Stakes (14 furlongs) at Goodwood, as well as finishing runner-up in the UK Listed Silver Cup (14 furlongs) at York & 3rd in the UK Listed Festival Stakes (10 furlongs) at Goodwood before travelling to Australia in anticipation of a tilt at the Melbourne Cup, but he duly missed the cut. This time, Cumani said, Drunken Sailor “has the Caulfield Cup as a target before his Flemington assault” & noted: ““He’s in good form. We missed the cut last year, but this time I’m assured he’s in.”
