California Stallion Olympio Dies Aged 23
US stallion Olympio (Naskra-Carols Christmas, by Whitesburg) “whose name was synonymous with ‘Derby’ in 1991, died of a ruptured aorta at Victory Rose Thoroughbreds in California” aged 23, reported bloodhorse.com. Kentucky-bred Olympio was produced from Verne Winchell’s blue hen mare Carols Christmas & during his 3YO season won the Gr2 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park, Gr2 Minnesota Derby in course-record time at Canterbury Downs, Gr2 American Derby at Arlington International Racecourse & Gr1 Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park, plus runner-up in the Gr1 Super Derbyat Louisiana Downs; he did not contest that year’s Gr1 Kentucky Derby. Overall Olympio finished 1st or 2nd in 13 of 17 starts & earned US$1,456,31. Olympio began his stallion career at Payson Stud in Kentucky & later stood at High Desert Farms & Hideaway Farms (both in California) before his years at Victory Rose. His 30 stakes-winners include Deep Gold, Olympic Charmer & Olympian, while his progeny earnings exceed US$18.8 million. In addition, as a broodmare sire he boasts French champion Carlotamix, US Gr1-winner Cigar Lion Tamer, Japan Gr1 Dirt Derby winner Café Olympus, plus graded-stakes winners Anew, Charm The Giant, High Again & Society’s Chairman.
