Singleton Almost Parted With Waterhouse
As the More Joyous barrier saga approaches its finality with the running of the Gr1 Cox Plate tomorrow, John Singleton has revealed that he ruminated about ending his 20-year owner-trainer relationship with Gai Waterhouse over the matter, reports dailytelegraph.com.au. Singleton believes that More Joyous now has only a 5% chance of winning Australasia's Weight For Age Championship from barrier 11. He commented: "It certainly crossed my mind (to leave Waterhouse stables) and then festered in me and then by yesterday I was philosophical ... I don't know why [she chose barrier 11]. I think it was just a brain snap. Maybe Gai was tired. It's inexplicable. We have to do our best with it ... It's gutting. We gave her a 20 per cent chance of winning. We would have had a lash at it ... In the end we're all human. We all make mistakes. Perhaps Gai just wasn't paying attention. Gai and I have had 20 odd Group 1 winners together. And we'd have more Group 2's and Group 3's. So it's been a good partnership. We do have a lot of ups and downs ... I still love Gai. I just don't understand why [she chose barrier 11]."
