No Derby For Shared Belief

Thursday, 20th March 2014

During Tuesday's national media teleconference, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer issued an update on the status of his champion 2YO Shared Belief (Candy Ride-Common Hope, by Storm Cat) who was last week officially removed from Kentucky Derby consideration, reports thoroughbreddailynews.com. The Eclipse Award winner has been recovering from a quarter crack of his right front foot at Golden Gate Fields in California which has prevented him making it to the track this year, ruining his Derby aspirations. "It's a slow-going process with that foot, but it's almost to the perfect point, so I think shortly you might see some works in a couple more weeks," said Hollendorfer. Asked to provide some detail on the nature of the injury, the Hall of Famer said, "Originally it was an abscess that came out the heel, and as time went on, some sand got into the foot…it's a long and drawn-out out process." Hollendorfer and his partners are happy to give their undefeated charge as much time as is needed. "If we don't have patience with the horse the way he is now, then we're going to lose a lot more time, so we're going to be 100% before we do some strenuous training with him," he explained. "We have a very sound horse except for the foot we're working on, so if we can get that behind us, then I think we'll show up later in the year, and if we can be running at the end of the year, we'll be happy." Many experts were tipping the 3YO as the early favourite for this year's Derby after his spectacular 5.75-length romp in the Gr1 Futurity at Hollywood Park in December.
