Werther On Quick Derby Back Up

Thursday, 4th June 2015

Talented Kiwi 3-year-old Werther will be looking to make it a quick feature double in Saturday's $600,000 Gr1 Queensland Derby (2400m). The Tavistock gelding was pretty impressive when defeating older horses in last weekend's Gr2 Eagle Farm Cup, and will again have the services of local hoop Jim Byrne who rode Peter Moody's Riva San to victory seven years ago in the same event. According to NZ Racing Desk, Byrne noted of last Saturday's win and the decision to press forward to this Saturday: "He jumped out and cruised along for two thirds of the race and the only work he had to do was from the 700 to home – it was just like a track gallop." Prior to that run where he defeated high class Boban, Werther had finished a credible runner-up in the Gr1 South Australian Derby. Werther has drawn barrier one for the Queensland Derby.
