Chrome Mount Up For Grabs

Friday, 5th June 2015

The coveted ride on US Horse of the Year California Chrome is up for grabs in the June 17 Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot after Frankie Dettori pledged his allegiance to the John Gosden-trained Western Hymn, reports Racing Post. Dettori partnered the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner in a seven-furlong track gallop at Ascot yesterday morning, but it may be the only time he gets to ride the North American star. "At this moment it doesn't look like Frankie Dettori will ride him," said Alan Sherman, son and assistant of trainer Art Sherman. "I don't think Victor (Espinoza, California Chrome's regular jockey) will be coming over but we've got a few European options." Dettori said: "I work for John Gosden and at this stage Western Hymn is a runner so I will be riding Western Hymn." Dettori added: "Of course I regard him as a threat (to Western Hymn), you only have to look at his CV. He's a great horse and we know that he's won on turf so he's going to be a big player." Sherman said California Chrome was not yet in peak physical condition but was coming along nicely. "We brought him (to Ascot) just to make sure he handles a grass track and the turn, which it looked like he did." He added: "He's a little bit leaner than he was in Dubai but that race took a lot out of him...although he's not quite where he was, he's looking good. He will go back to Newmarket now where he will just gallop and he will be given one more breeze next week."
