Well Bred Colt Makes His Mark

Wednesday, 24th June 2015

Regally related colt Make A Mark (Zabeel-Markisa, by Danehill) lived up to his name when recording a narrow but impressive debut victory at Newcastle yesterday. The Team Hawkes trained son of Zabeel, who is closely related to former champion Octagonal, belied his inexperience and pedigree when fighting on strongly to score by 0.5-length over race favourite Naranja and fellow debutant Fabrizio (High Chaparral) in a colts, geldings and entires maiden over 1200m. Make A Mark, who was purchased by Champion Thoroughbreds for NZ$180,000 at the 2013 NZ Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Wentwood Grange, is out of the beautifully bred Danehill mare Markisa. Runner-up in the 2005 Gr3 Eulogy Stakes, Markisa is a granddaughter of Sir Patrick Hogan's legendary mare Eight Carat, dam of 10-time Gr1 winner Octagonal, his freakishly talented brother Mouawad, and fellow Gr1 winners Kaapstad, Diamond Lover and Marquise. Other esteemed family members include Viscount, Tristalove, Shower Of Roses, Viking Ruler, Don Eduardo, and recently retired siblings Shooting To Win and Deep Field.
