Srikandi Aimed At Top Sprints

Thursday, 25th June 2015

Trainer Ciaron Maher says that top-class mare Srikandi (Dubawi-Raining, by Hurricane Sky) will be aimed at the feature sprints in Melbourne during the spring, reports horseracing.com.au. Srikandi established herself as one of the best sprinting mares in Australia when claiming the Gr1 winter double of the Stradbroke Handicap and Tattersall's Tiara in Brisbane, and Maher feels she is now ready to step up against the elite open class sprinters in the spring. "This is a bit different to last year as she'd been in work all year and was feeling the effects of a long campaign. She just didn't come up for the spring," Maher told The Herald Sun. "This year, she didn't race earlier in the year and she's going out for a break in great shape and should bounce back quickly." He added: "I think she's now done enough to target the top-drawer sprints. With her rating, we have to have a shot at them. She's improved every campaign as she's needed to do and I'm hoping for that to happen again." Srikandi has won 9 of her 13 starts for $2,172,600 prize money.
