Makfi Target For Puccini

Wednesday, 1st July 2015

Classy Kiwi galloper Puccini (Encosta de Lago-Miss Opera, by Paris Opera) showed he was on track for the spring with a pleasing gallop at Matamata yesterday, reports theinformant.co.nz. The rising 5YO galloped over 1000m alongside stable-mate Antonio Lombardo, running his final 600m on the all-weather sand surface in 37.5 seconds. "That's the most serious work he's done, he's coming along nicely," co-trainer and regular work rider Peter McKay said. "He's already had a couple of run-ups, so he's well on target." McKay is aiming the son of Encosta de Lago at the Gr1 Makfi Challenge Stakes at Hastings on 27 August, but is unsure what path he will take to the 1400m feature. "The Foxbridge Plate two weeks before Hastings would suit but even with it being at Te Rapa I'm not sure if the ground would be good enough for him," McKay said. "Ideally we'd like to start him first-up at Ruakaka but unfortunately the way the programs are it doesn't work for him." He added: "There's still a good chance we'll take him up there, maybe for the late July or early August meeting, and he could have a gallop between races. Once we get that far we'll have a better idea of how things are panning out for him." Puccini has won 8 of his 28 starts, highlighted by Gr1 victories in the New Zealand Derby and Thorndon Mile.
