Spring Cheer On Track For NZ Cup

Wednesday, 1st July 2015

Spring Cheer (Bachelor Duke-Guardian Angel, by Groom Dancer) is back in work preparing for a campaign aimed at another New Zealand Cup success at Riccarton in November, reports NZ Racing Desk. Spring Cheer's latest appearance was at Wanganui when finishing sixth behind Madonna Mia in the Foxton Cup on 30 May and trainer Kevin Myers is confident he has the Bachelor Duke mare on the right path towards the Gr3 two-mile feature, which she won in 2013. "Dummy [Myers] just wasn't happy with her and he backed off her," said Rick Williams, general manager of Spring Cheer's owner, The Oaks Stud. "He rang the other day and said she was all right again and sound and he'll have her ready for the New Zealand Cup again." He added: "I don't know what Dummy will do with her between times but if he says he'll get to the Cup that's all we want to know. She was lean and mean when she won it and she's so much stronger now." The 2013 New Zealand Cup was Spring Cheer's last win, though setbacks have meant she has only six starts in the last 18 months. Her record currently stands at 4 wins from 18 starts for NZ$196,000 prize money.
