Zabeel 2YO Impresses On Debut

Thursday, 2nd July 2015

Leading trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman added to their impressive tally of winners for the season and also unveiled a potential top-class colt when the well-bred Zacada made a stylish debut at Rotorua yesterday, reports theinformant.co.nz. Bred by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, Zacada is by Zabeel out of the Giant's Causeway mare Lacada and is a full-brother to Bruce Wallace's talented Gr2 Waikato Guineas runner-up Giant Turtle. Zacada's second dam is the dual Gr1-winning Kiwi mare Showella (Lord Ballina), dam of stakes winners Safwa and Showcause. The manner of Zacada's debut victory augurs well for a bright future, with the rising 3YO making a looping run around the field approaching the turn and accelerating smartly to win easily by 4.75-lengths with jockey Matthew Cameron even easing him down in the concluding stages. "He was impressive today," Baker said. "We took him to the trials and he tried to leap out the front of the old-style gates at Avondale. Then we took him home and gave him a jump-out with the new overhead gates at Cambridge and he was good as gold. Today he came to the races and he's done the job well." He added: "I wouldn't think we'll run him again this season. We'll give him a break and save him for his three-year-old season." He added: "He might be a good Derby horse next year." Zacada's win took Baker and Forsman's tally for the season to 105 wins, just 6 wins shy of John Sargent's record of 111 set in 2011-12.
