Golden Horn Wins Gr1 Eclipse Stakes
At Sandown in the UK, former Darley shuttler Cape Cross (Green Desert-Park Appeal, by Ahonoora) celebrated a Gr1 success when 3YO colt Golden Horn (Cape Cross-Fleche d'Or, by Dubai Destination) scored by 3.5-lengths for trainer John Gosden and jockey Frankie Dettori in the £450,000 Gr1 Eclipse Stakes (10 furlongs) for 3YO+, over 4YO entire The Grey Gatsby (Mastercraftsman-Marie Vison, by Entrepreneur) & 4YO gelding Western Hymn (High Chaparral-Blue Rhapsody, by Cape Cross). This was a brilliant performance by the unbeaten Golden Horn who took his record to 5 wins (including the Gr1 Epsom Derby & Gr2 Dante Stakes) from 5 starts for £1,186,604 earnings. Champion jockey Frankie Dettori was full of praise for racing's newest star labelling Golden Horn the best 3YO he has ever ridden. "In none of the races I've ridden him in or any of the gallops has he ever felt tired. He just keeps on galloping. He is a remarkable horse. His constitution is unbelievable. I've never got to the bottom of him. As a three-year-old, right now, I would say he is the best I've ridden," he told Racing Post. Underscoring Golden Horn's class is the fact that he is just the fifth horse in history to claim the Derby-Eclipse double, joining turf luminaries Tulyar, Mill Reef, Nashwan and Sea The Stars as the only horses to have achieved the feat. As for Golden Horn's next assignment, trainer John Gosden said: "The horse will tell us. It's my job to watch, see, and feel how he is, but if he's well then the King George is obviously an option. If it's a dance too far then we will wait. He's not in the Arc, but I think he will be an Arc horse unless it comes up bottomless, but that's getting a long way a long way ahead of ourselves."
