Power King Wins Gr1 Durban July Handicap

Monday, 6th July 2015

At Greyville racecourse in South Africa, 4YO entire Power King (Silvano-Northern Gale, by Northern Guest) survived a protest from the runner-up when scoring by 0.75-length for trainer Dean Kannemeyer in South Africa's greatest race, the R3.5 million Gr1 Durban July Handicap (2200m) for 3YO+, over 6YO gelding Punta Arenas (Silvano-Peru, by Candy Stripes) & 5YO entire Tellina (Silvano-Tachina, by Spectrum). This was the first top-flight victory for Power King who took his record to 6 wins (including the Gr3 Kenilworth Winter Classic) and 9 placings from 20 starts. The win was the third Durban July for trainer Dean Kannemeyer who said: "This is the ultimate race for a trainer in South Africa and I am over the moon. The horse was a little wobbly and exhausted afterwards so I will let him get over this before deciding on his future." Race favourite (7-2) Legal Eagle appeared to cop some slight interference in the concluding stages, but jockey Anton Marcus said the 3YO had his chance. "I was slightly impeded in the straight but I have no complaints," he said.
