ATC Executive Caught Up In Midsummer Sun Cobalt Affair
Racing NSW stewards have issued Australian Turf Club executive manager Matt Rudolph with a show cause notice in relation to the Midsummer Sun cobalt case. Following an independent investigation by the Honourable Keith Mason AC QC, stewards allege that Rudolph met with trainers Mark and Sam Kavanagh at a Sydney hotel and pressured Sam Kavanagh to withdraw evidence that Dr Tom Brennan, Partner in the Flemington Equine Clinic, was the supplier of the 100ml injectable bottle labelled 'Vitamin Complex' which was found to contain cobalt. The Sam Kavanagh-trained Midsummer Sun returned positive readings to cobalt and caffeine following his win in the Gosford Gold Cup in January. As a result, Racing NSW stewards suspended Kavanagh's training licence. Racing NSW released a statement yesterday that said Rudolph was required to show cause why he should not be penalised pursuant to the Rules of Racing for conduct arising out of the Stewards' inquiry.
