Cobalt Rumours Dismissed By RIU

Wednesday, 8th July 2015

The Racing Integrity Unit has moved to put an end to persistent speculation that a number of New Zealand racing stables are under investigation over cobalt irregularities, reports NZ Racing Desk. While the rumours are not new, they gathered significant momentum after the RIU announced two weeks ago that first one, then another two horses trained by Matamata partners Lance O'Sullivan and Andrew Scott had returned swabs that breached the cobalt threshold of 200mg per litre or urine. That investigation remains on foot, but in response to the rumours around supposed other cobalt cases, RIU Co-chief steward Ross Neal felt the need for a public statement to clarify the situation. "I can unequivocally state that any rumours suggesting other stables are under investigation for cobalt breaches are groundless," Neal said. "There is absolutely no truth to them." He added: "In recent months the RIU has tested hundreds of samples for cobalt and the only three that have raised a query are those currently under investigation."
