Darby McCarthy Indigenous Scholarship Launched

Wednesday, 8th July 2015

Racing Victoria in partnership with the Koorie Academy of Excellence yesterday launched the Darby McCarthy Indigenous Scholarship, which will give one lucky student from the academy the opportunity to be part of a four-week work placement in the industry, mentoring support, and $5000 towards their educational development, reports Racing.com. The scholarship is named in honour of Aboriginal jockey Darby McCarthy, one of Australia's greatest-ever indigenous riders who boasts multiple Gr1 wins in time-honoured races such as the Australian Derby and Epsom Handicap. McCarthy said he was proud to be associated with a scholarship that would give young indigenous Australians an opportunity to pursue a career in racing. "It was certainly good to me," McCarthy said of the racing industry. "If someone could repeat that or even go better, I'd feel very proud. It just opens another door in my beloved sport of racing to give an opportunity to excel in whatever it may be." He added: "To be welcomed by the minister and Racing Victoria to acknowledge me and help support the students - our babies coming through...does it get any better than that? I don't think so."
