Gr1 Target For Astronomos

Monday, 13th July 2015

Trainer David Vandyke has nominated the Gr1 Metropolitan (2400m) as the spring target for talented UK-bred stayer Astronomos after the 5YO recorded yet another impressive victory at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Racing in the red and white colours of Paul Fudge's Waratah Thoroughbreds, the lightly raced Astronomos took his record to 5 wins from 7 starts when surging late to score by 0.2-length over Dure and Campania in the Tab.com.au Handicap over 2000m. "He is a quality horse and the Metropolitan is the race we have in mind for him," Vandyke told AAP. "He will have a couple of weeks off and come back and make his way through the grades." He added: "He is one of the best-mannered colts I've ever had anything to do with. He is laid-back and quite a lazy track worker but he might be the most exciting stayer I've trained." By English Derby winner New Approach, Astronomos is out of the US-bred mare Crimson Ribbon (Lemon Drop Kid), a full sister to Gr2 Hardwicke Stakes winner Bronze Cannon and US Gr3 winner Valiant Girl.
