Muhaarar Wins Gr1 July Cup

Monday, 13th July 2015

At Newmarket racecourse in the UK, 3YO UK-bred colt Muhaarar (Oasis Dream-Tahrir, by Linamix) confirmed himself as the new star of British sprinting when getting up in the last few strides to score by a nose for trainer Charles Hills in the Gr1 July Cup (6 furlongs) for 3YO+, over 7YO gelding Tropics (Speightstown-Taj Aire, by Taj Alriyadh) & 4YO gelding Eastern Impact (Bahamian Bounty-Kate the Great, by Xaar). This was the second consecutive Gr1 victory for the Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Muhaara who took his record to 5 wins (including the inaugural Gr1 Commonwealth Cup & Gr3 Greenham Stakes) and 3 placings (including the Gr1 Middle Park Stakes) from 9 starts for £698,677 earnings. Despite not seeming to appreciate the tricky July course, Muhaarar's class was enough to get him home in the end. "It was the track I was worried about more than anything. He didn't come down the hill too good, but he's a real fighter and he galloped right to the line," trainer Charles Hills said. "We'll put him back on a nice level track now. He's in the Maurice de Gheest and the Haydock Sprint and there's Ascot at the end of the year." He added: "I think seven furlongs is no problem, either. He's just a very good horse." Australian sprinter Brazen Beau was unable to build upon his excellent second in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last month finishing a disappointing seventh.
