Quechua Wins Gr1 Singapore Derby
At Kranji racecourse in Singapore, 4YO Argentinian-bred entire Quechua (Pure Prize-Queen Cabaret, by Wild Event) scored by 0.1-length for trainer Patrick Shaw in the S$1.15 million Gr1 Singapore Derby (2000m), over 4YO New Zealand-bred gelding and reigning Horse of the Year War Affair (O'Reilly-Kristique, by Kris S) & 4YO Australian-bred gelding Fastnet Dragon (Fastnet Rock-Sister Madrid, by Fuji Kiseki). This was the second Gr1 victory for Quechua who took his record to 7 wins (including the Gr1 Singapore Gold Cup, Gr2 San Isidro Clasico Ensayo in his native Argentina & Gr3 New Year Cup) and 13 placings (including the Gr1 Singapore Airlines International Cup & Gr1 G.P. Miguel Alfredo Martinez de Hoz) from 21 starts. "He's been such a good horse to us. He's won the Gold Cup and now the Derby, what more can you ask of him," winning trainer Patrick Shaw said. "I was pretty confident he would be right in it coming to the top of the straight as he's such a fighter. He dug down real deep when War Affair got to him, and was just too good today." He added: "He's going for a well-deserved break now and I will probably bring him back for the Weight-for-Age races as well as the Kranji Mile, Raffles Cup leading up to the Gold Cup." The unlucky runner of the race was undoubtedly the favourite War Affair, who was posted four to five horses deep for the entire race.
