Fontein Ruby Retired

Tuesday, 14th July 2015

Gr2-winning filly Fontein Ruby has been retired due to a fractured sesamoid. "We had high hopes that she could win a Group I for us this spring, but she's fractured a sesamoid, so we have been forced to retire her," syndicate manager Mike Cattell told breednet. "She is being boxed for two weeks and will then progress to a small yard, so will be fit to go to stud in the spring." He added: "She has been an outstanding horse for all of us, but we aren't commercial breeders, so she will have to be sold." The daughter of Turffontein won 6 of her 19 starts for $1,052,330 in prize money. Trained by Robert Smerdon, Fontein Ruby's biggest victory came in last year's Gr2 Edward Manifold Stakes where she defeated talented fillies Maastricht and Crafty.
