Light Spring For Srikandi

Wednesday, 15th July 2015

Trainer Ciaron Maher has revealed that top sprinting mare Srikandi will be restricted to just one start in the spring so he can focus on preparing her for a trip to Royal Ascot next year, reports AAP. Srikandi, who established herself as one of the best sprinting mares in Australia when claiming the Gr1 winter double of the Stradbroke Handicap and Tattersall's Tiara in Brisbane, will bid for her third straight top-flight success when she lines up in the $1 million Gr1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) at Flemington on 7 November. After that, Maher said her long-term target was the Gr1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes in June. "The big goal with Srikandi is the Golden Jubilee (or Diamond Jubilee) at Royal Ascot," Maher said. "My plan is to give her just the one spring start at Flemington and then two or three races in the autumn before she travels." Being a daughter of world-class stallion Dubawi, Maher and Srikandi's syndicate of owners realise her value as a broodmare prospect would skyrocket should she be able to win a Gr1 race in the northern hemisphere. "Srikandi has a pedigree that would be very appealing to European breeders," Maher said.
