Zabeel 3YO Making His Mark

Thursday, 16th July 2015

Team Hawkes look to have quite an exciting prospect on their hands after regally related colt Make A Mark (Zabeel-Markisa, by Danehill) maintained his unbeaten record at Warwick Farm yesterday. The 3YO son of Zabeel, who is closely related to former champion Octagonal, took his record to 2 wins from as many starts when jumping to the lead and then kicking strongly in the straight to score a dominant 2.3-length win in the Bledisloe Cup Festival Handicap over 1300m. "He has above average ability and with today's win we know he's got it," co-trainer Michael Hawkes told Sky Racing. "He's a Zabeel and generally they get better as they get older." He added: "He's a nice horse and we're glad to have him. He has a lot of upside and a lot of improvement to come." When asked what plans the stable had in store for Make A Mark, Hawkes said: "I think we might give him a break now. He's done a good job, he's two for two. He's just a baby but he's a really nice horse and hopefully there's bigger and better things for him." Purchased by Champion Thoroughbreds for NZ$180,000 at the 2013 NZB Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Wentwood Grange, Make A Mark is the third foal to race from the beautifully bred Danehill mare Markisa. Runner-up in the Gr3 Eulogy Stakes in New Zealand, Markisa is a granddaughter of Sir Patrick Hogan's legendary mare Eight Carat, dam of 10-time Gr1 winner Octagonal, his freakishly talented brother Mouawad, and fellow Gr1 winners Kaapstad, Diamond Lover and Marquise. Other family members belonging to this esteemed bloodline include Viscount, Tristalove, Shower Of Roses, Viking Ruler, Don Eduardo, and recently retired siblings Shooting To Win and Deep Field.
