Confidence in Kiwi-Bred

Friday, 17th July 2015

Craig Williams believes that New Zealand-bred 2YO Portman can make a winning start to his career at Flemington on Saturday, reports NZ Racing Desk. The Melbourne-based jockey will partner the Danny O'Brien-trained Portman in the opening event on the card, the Flemington Family Handicap over 1200m. "He's a beautiful Makfi colt," Williams said. "He's a bit of a lad. He's not a jump and run two-year-old, but I expect, whatever he does, that he will be very competitive." he added: "He should be hitting the line. He's never been down the straight before and he's a first starter, but he seems as though he's got something." Portman, who will carry the claret and gold silks of owner Qatar Bloodstock, was purchased by O'Brien for $200,000 at the 2014 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Little Avondale Stud. From the Jeune mare Farasha, Portman is a half-brother to dual Gr3 winner and Gr1 placegetter Sharnee Rose (Nadeem) and hails from the renowned Easy Date family of Gr1 winners Snippets and Forensics and Arrowfield stallion Not A Single Doubt.
