Melbourne Cup Goal For Hartnell
Meanwhile, trainer John O'Shea has confirmed that fellow UK import Hartnell will be aimed at this year's Melbourne Cup. The son of Authorized made a brilliant start to his Australian career in the autumn when finishing runner-up to stable-mate Contributer in the Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes, before going on to claim victories in the Gr3 Sky High Stakes and Gr1 The BMW. Hartnell then ended his first southern hemisphere preparation with a creditable fourth in the Gr1 Sydney Cup (3200m) in April. "If we had our time again in the Sydney Cup we would have just taken a little sit going out of the straight the first time and we might have had a different result," O'Shea said. "He'll start in Sydney in the Chelmsford and then probably run in the Hill Stakes and go into the Turnbull and then the Cox Plate and then the Melbourne Cup." He added: "He looks to have improved nicely and strengthened up." The weight-for-age Gr2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) will be run at Royal Randwick on 5 September.
