Equiano Adds UK Gr3

Monday, 20th July 2015

At Newbury in the UK, Swettenham's dual Gr1 Kings Stand Stakes winner Equiano (Acclamation-Entente Cordiale, by Ela-Mana-Mou) added a Group success when 3YO colt Strath Burn (Equiano-Irish Light, by Irish River) scored by 1-length for trainer Charles Hills in the Gr3 Hackwood Stakes (6 furlongs) for 3YO+, over 3YO Godolphin colt Portamento (Shamardal-Octave, by Unbridled's Song) & 4YO mare Divine (Dark Angel-Carallia, by Common Grounds). This was a well-deserved maiden stakes victory for the consistent Strath Burn, who took his record to 2 wins and 3 placings (including the Gr2 Prix Robert Papin & Gr3 Cornwallis Stakes) from 8 starts for £86,158 earnings. "He'll be a better horse with more juice in the ground," trainer Charles Hills told Sky Sports. "It's great to get him on a nice, level track. There's a few nice races for him now, we'll have a look." He added: "It would be nice to win a Group 2. I don't want to throw him straight into the deep end in a Group 1 and France could be an option for him."
