Fastnet Rock Colt Excites O'Brien
Aidan O'Brien is tipping a bright future for Shogun after the Fastnet Rock colt got off the mark at the second time of asking when scoring by 2.15-lengths in the Darley 2YO maiden stakes (7 furlongs) at the Curragh on Saturday. O'Brien has a big opinion of the well-related colt who is a full brother to English Oaks winner Qualify. "He was a complete baby the first day and didn't know what was going on," O'Brien told Racing UK. "Before he ran the first day he was half-speeding like a really smart horse. He will have learned a lot there. He travelled and quickened but was still very green. He's a horse to look forward to." He added: I'd say he's very smart - he always showed that he's very smart. Joseph (O'Brien) said he was only doing a half-speed, even when he got to the front." O'Brien said he will now test Shogun in stakes company, with the juvenile holding several big race entries including the Gr1 Phoenix Stakes on 9 August and the Gr1 Vincent O'Brien National Stakes on 13 September. "He can step in fairly quickly now to the big races. He's big and hardy and should be well able," O'Brien said. "He could step into the Futurity and those races. He's a big, mature horse. He's a full-brother to the filly (Qualify), which also makes him exciting."
