Change Of Dates For Newcastle Spring Carnival

Tuesday, 21st July 2015

Australia's premier provincial racing club will host the prestigious 2015 Newcastle Spring Carnival on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September, a bold move away from its traditional Wednesday and Thursday meeting. Newcastle Jockey Club CEO, Cameron Williams said the change of dates provides greater opportunity for more Novocastrians to enjoy the premier two-day racing event. "Newcastle spring racing is undoubtedly a highlight of the social calendar in Newcastle," Mr Williams said. "It attracts the glorious spectacle of horse racing at its best, with unmissable action on the track and fabulous style and glamour alongside it." Friday's racing will see four Group 3 feature races, the Cameron Handicap, the Spring Stakes, the Tibbie Stakes and the historic Newcastle Cup with the day offering a staggering $663,000 in prize money and attracting some of the best horses in the country. As an example the 2011 Newcastle Cup winner, Green Moon went on to win the 2012. The Newcastle Spring Carnival has a great tradition as a valuable lead-up to the Sydney and Melbourne carnivals, attracting trainers and thoroughbred owners keen to race at Broadmeadow. Saturday's Ladies Day will feature prize money of $176,000 across eight races including the Broadmeadow Mile, the Hurricane Stakes and the Provincial Cup to name a few. Nominations for all races on both days close at 11am on Monday 14 September. Whilst Friday focuses on serious racing, Saturday is set for a day of fun and excitement with a range of entertainment and activities taking place including the popular Fashions on the Field that attracted around 150 entries last year. Sponsors are already lining up to host the biggest event on Newcastle's racing calendar that will attract thousands of people to the carnival from across Australia. Tickets for Newcastle Jockey Club's 2015 Newcastle Spring Carnival went on sale yesterday for NJC Members and Friday 24 July for general public.
