Rebel Dane Back After Wind Op

Wednesday, 22nd July 2015

Trainer Gary Portelli is hoping that an ostensibly successful throat operation will see talented sprinter Rebel Dane (California Dane-Texarcana, by More Than Ready) return to his best form this campaign, reports Racing.com. The Gr1 winner has not raced since finishing well down the track in the All Aged Stakes at Randwick in April, after which it was discovered he was having trouble with his breathing. The rising 6YO was subsequently diagnosed with a grade five paralysis of the larynx which required surgery. "We scoped him the next day [after the All Aged] and his throat was completely paralysed. His throat wasn't working at all," Portelli told RSNs Shane Anderson yesterday. "He's been back in work for about three weeks now and he's looking really well. At this stage the operation looks like it's been successful. He did a bit of three-quarter pace down the straight this morning and he was as clean as a whistle, there was no noise at all." He added: "He is a horse that does usually make a bit of noise in his work but there was no noise at all today, so hopefully we see him back to his brilliant best." Portelli said that because of the throat operation he had not made any plans regarding Rebel Dane's spring program. He said he would adopt a wait-and-see approach before committing him to a start. "My vet gave him a scope yesterday [Monday] and his throat was perfect so we will probably give him another three or four weeks of work. By then we will know where he is fitness wise and we can see what races are available at that point," he said. "But I'm not setting him for anything [because of the throat operation]. I just want to watch him come along steadily."  Rebel Dane has won 6 of his 22 starts, with his biggest win coming in the 2013 Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
