Caulfield Cup Goal For Our Ivanhowe
Trainer Lee Freedman says that talented import Our Ivanhowe (Soldier Hollow-Indigo Girl, by Sternkönig) will be aimed at the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in the spring, reports Racing.com. However, Freedman, who trains in partnership with his brother Anthony, said the talented import will have anything but an orthodox preparation and is likely to go into the Caulfield Cup at just his second run back from a spell. "We may only give him one run going into the Caulfield Cup and hopefully if everything pans out as we hope then he will press on to the Melbourne Cup," Freedman told RSN radio yesterday. "Depending on what Mr Carpenter [Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter] does in terms of the handicaps we'd be keen to run him in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups." Our Ivanhowe, a dual Gr1 winner in his native Germany (when campaigned as Ivanhowe), made an encouraging Australian debut earlier this year when finishing a close-up seventh (beaten 3 lengths) behind The Bowler in the Gr3 RA Lee Stakes in Adelaide in May. "I was very satisfied with his effort on firm ground over a mile," Freedman said. "It allowed me to give the horse five or six weeks down at Pinecliff where he was in the paddock during the day but he also spent some time on the walker and we kept the horse in very light training." He added: "Like a lot of these German horses you have to be very mindful of their feet but his feet are very good at the moment and we've got a system of shoeing him that I'm confident will be perfect for him going forward." Testament to Ivanhowe's class is the fact that he polled third behind Sea The Moon and Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist in Germany's Horse of the Year award earlier this year.
