Double Gives Weir Premiership

Monday, 27th July 2015

Darren Weir prepared a winning double at Victoria's final metropolitan meeting of the season to claim his second successive Victorian Metropolitan Trainers' Premiership at Geelong yesterday, reports Racing.com. Victories to Strong Hand and Burning Front gave Weir 79 city winners for the season, seven wins clear of runner-up and four-time title holder Peter Moody. David Hayes and Tom Dabernig finished in third position on 58 wins. A total of seven winners across the weekend, including a double at Caulfield and a treble in Adelaide on Saturday, took Weir's national tally to 295 wins for the season putting him within reach of what would be a remarkable 300 win milestone.  The Ballarat-based trainer won his maiden Australian Trainers' Premiership with 253 winners last year and while he said this season had exceeded expectations, his goal was to win "better races" in coming seasons. "We can't really expect to win more races than have (this season)," Weir said. "You'd be dreaming to think you could do that." He added: "So obviously we want to be competitive in better races. That's the goal we've got now."
