Choisir Mounts Late Challenge To Lonhro
Various racing premierships have gone down to the line in the current season, but in the final week of the racing year none is as tight as that between Lonhro and Choisir for Australian sires by winners title, reports Aushorse. Only two wins separated the pair as of Sunday with Lonhro on 154 and Choisir with 152 individual winners. Choisir closed the gap thanks to the win of Japhils at Caulfield on Saturday. A $105,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the draft of Three Bridges Thoroughbreds, Japhils won the Aaron Barnett Handicap (1200m) for prominent owner Phil Sly. As Lonhro attempts to repel the late challenge of Choisir, he is also attempting to better his record total of 160 winners established last season. Lonhro had his first winner in North America this month but is no longer shuttling, staying at home at Darley's Kelvinside Stud where he served a book of 96 mares last season. Lonhro is sixth on the sires by earnings list with $8.012m from 247 wins, while Choisir lies in 11th place with 237 wins by his offspring amassing $6.805m prize money. Leading the earnings list is Fastnet Rock whose progeny have won 215 races in Australia for the season and earned $10.26 million.
