Gleneagles Out Of Sussex

Tuesday, 28th July 2015

The eagerly anticipated 'Duel on the Downs' between Gleneagles and Solow in Wednesday's Gr1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood will no longer take place after Aidan O'Brien confirmed the withdrawal of Gleneagles on account of the ground, reports Racing Post. The ground at Goodwood was described as good to soft (round course) yesterday morning. "We were hoping for good, fast ground for Gleneagles," O'Brien said. "They've had rain at Goodwood and he's not going to have his ground, so we decided against running him. We'll decide over the next week or so where he might go next." Gleneagles absence has seen French star Solow firm into odds-on favouritism for the race. His trainer Freddy Head said: "Obviously it makes life easier because Gleneagles is a beast. It is still a good race but we are facing a few horses that we have already beaten at Ascot." He added: "I think any give in the ground will help Solow as well. He is very well and I think he is just as good as he was before Ascot." Solow is set to take on seven rivals in tomorrow's mile feature, including Cougar Mountain, who finished third behind Solow in the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot, last year's 2,000 Guineas winner Night Of Thunder, and the progressive Arod, last-start winner of the Gr2 Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot.
